Maddi Minicozzi -- Pressed In Metal -- October 21th, 2026 -- 6pm-9pm -- Capacity: 25

Maddi Minicozzi -- Pressed In Metal -- October 21th, 2026 -- 6pm-9pm -- Capacity: 25

Explore the art of metal embossing through a pointillism-inspired dot work technique, using individual punched impressions to build raised patterns, textures, and imagery in aluminum.

Learn how to work with embossing styluses and 1/16" roll pin punches, exploring how different tools, spacing, density, scale, and repetition can be used to create unique dotted compositions. Beginning on a practice sheet, participants will experiment with these techniques before developing and transferring a design onto a larger final piece.

The workshop will also introduce the basics of setting metal grommets, incorporating them into the finished piece as both a functional and decorative detail. Each piece will be finished with four grommets and accompanied by four chrome mounting screws for hanging and display.

To close, we'll explore the transformation of physical artwork into digital imagery through experimental flatbed scanning. By playing with movement, light, and distortion, participants will discover how their embossed metalwork can take on entirely new forms. Each participant will receive three experimental scans of their work, extending the creative process beyond the physical piece.

Original design templates will be available for inspiration, or participants can develop their own compositions. No prior experience needed, just a curious mind.

Instructor/Artist Info:

Maddi Minicozzi (she/her) is a Brooklyn-based creative director, curator, and artist whose background in Industrial and Interaction Design shaped her understanding of form, function, material, and human connection. Her practice centers on material translation and tactile storytelling, blending narrative with an intuitive approach to space, texture, and atmosphere to create objects and experiences that feel both intentional and deeply human.

Drawn to the ways materials can hold memory, labor, and evidence of touch, Minicozzi explores texture and surface through sculptural objects and immersive environments. Influenced by endangered craft traditions, her work considers pressure, detail, and devotional labor as forms of preservation and care, investigating how objects, surfaces, and marks can retain emotional weight over time.

Passionate about accessible, non-institutional learning, Minicozzi created recess at @playgroundbk, a community-driven workshop series centered on creative exploration, skill sharing, and making. Across her artistic and curatorial practice, she builds spaces and narratives that invite curiosity, connection, and new ways of engaging with material and one another.
